15th Annual Big Pine and Lower Keys Dolphin Tournament

During the weekend of June 6-8, the Big Pine and Lower Keys Dolphin Tournament hosted 149 anglers, fishing aboard 50 boats. 55% of the anglers traveled from outside Monroe County. Captain’s meeting; weigh-in and the awards banquet took place at the Sugarloaf Key Resort KOA. Boondocks’ Grille, Draft House & Miniature Golf catered the awards banquet. Sponsorships from Jig’s Bait & Tackle, Dolphin Marina & Lodging, Sugarloaf Key Resort KOA, Big Pine & Lower Keys Rotary Club, Team World Cat, Sweetwater Homes, Keys Federal Credit Union, Marine Bank, Chicago Title of the Florida Keys, Big Pine Resort Motel, Sugarloaf Food Company, Pirate Wellness Center, Home Depot, and Big Pine Storage contributed some of the many prizes, giveaways and cash awards presented during the tournament.

Weigh masters, Captain Dave Wiley and Captain Lenny Svetin, weighed in 32 dolphin, 1 tuna and 4 wahoo, many of the dolphin in the 25 to 40 lb range.

Trophies co-sponsored by Big Pine & Lower Keys Rotary and the Monroe County Tourist Development Council “Come As You Are” and cash prizes were awarded to:

Special Awards

A ceramic tile jewelry box from the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce and $500 cash sponsored by Team World Cat were given to Top Lady Angler, Nicole Butnaru fishing aboard the Lively Lady who caught a 29.1 pound dolphin.

Custom Ricky Rod and reel combo’s donated by Jig’s Bait and Tackle went to John Sullivan of Philadelphia, PA fishing aboard the Team Fisher for catching a 20.85 pound tuna and to Bill Gray from Big Pine Key, fishing aboard the R & R for bringing in a 20.75 pound wahoo. The Chamber’s Hard Luck Award went to Taylor Williams, age 6 of Venice, Florida who was sea sick fishing Saturday consequently falling asleep on Sunday and missing the opportunity to catch a fish.

It was announced the 16th Annual Big Pine & Lower Keys Dolphin Tournament will be held June 12th, 13th, & 14th, 2009.
